In my last visit to my gynae, scans showed that the little one (now about 36+5) is already head down. With my hips starting to loosen (and hurt because I have injured them before) and my pelvis getting pretty sore, the gynae advised that I pack my hospital bag even though I have a c-section planned for mid-May.
People seem to make a big deal about what to put inside their hospital bag, but a really kind new mum who also chose to deliver at Mt Alvernia reached out to me (mainly to remind me not to walk too much because she knew I was really busy at work, haha) to let me know what she packed and ended up using or not using. Recently, a good friend came over and shared some tips as well.
Here's what's in my hospital bag (and my bag itself) (prices indicated are from the time of purchase):
1. 20" Hard Case Carry On Luggage

I was told the "loop pads" given in the hospital aren't comfortable, you still have to wear an underwear over it, and some hospitals even charge you per piece. So many mums recommended stocking up on overnight period panties.
I got these on a quick makan trip to JB for less than $1 per panty. When on sale on Shopee or Lazada, you're looking at about $1.50 per piece. Brands recommended by fellow mums
include Sofy or Kotex. These shops
on Shopee or
Lazada (depending on which platform you use more) has a variety of other brands too for cheap if you don't mind trying them. But if you do happen to make a run to JB, just stock up there!
I got myself the
Shapee Belly Wrap+ for about $27, but my doctor prescribed me one in the end to wear at the hospital post c-section (it cost about $70...oh well...)
4. Compression Stockings
These were also prescribed by my gynae.
5. Disposable Breast Pad Samples, Nipple Balm and Silver Nursing Cups
6. Medicine Prescribed By My Gynae
I was given pre-admission medication because of my elective c-section.
7. Toiletries Bag (Skincare Only)
Mt Alvernia gives the mum a full set of toiletries, so I was told packing skincare and makeup will suffice. I packed a bunch of skincare samples to keep things light.
8. Admission Letter!
Very important.
9. A Pair of Comfy Socks
I was planning to bring bedroom slippers too, but was told Mt Alvernia provides a pair which I can take home after.
10. Nursing Bra, Underwear, and Going Home Clothes for Myself and the Baby
I packed a loose button down dress for easy wearing.
11. Most Importantly, a Phone Charger!
In the end, my bag ended up being pretty empty. The hospital gives a diaper bag with a ton of samples, so I'll probably fit that in the other compartment so it's easy to bring all the stuff home.
Things I initially wanted to bring but omitted:
- Breast pump. Some people do bring these so the lactation consultant can teach them how to use it.
- Hospicare wipes. I was told to bring these as I won't be able to shower. It's a pretty heavy pack. Thankfully, the hospital now provides a pack in the take home maternity bag.
- Toiletries. They're provided.
That's pretty much it!
I'm generally a very simple packer even when I travel, so my packing list may seem a little minimalist. Ultimately, just pack what you think you need, don't forget that you'll probably be taking things back from the hospital, and if you need anything, there will always be a pharmacy just around the corner!
